Osteopathic Medicine
Osteopaths in Australia are primary healthcare practitioners who are trained to assess, diagnose, and treat a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions and other health issues. They use a holistic approach that considers the interrelationship between the body’s structure and function. Osteopaths focus on manual techniques, such as osteopathic manipulative therapy (OMT), to improve joint mobility, alleviate pain, and enhance the body’s natural healing mechanisms.
What is Osteopathy
Osteopaths not only address symptoms but also look for underlying causes and factors contributing to health issues. They may provide lifestyle advice, ergonomic recommendations, and exercise programs to support overall well-being.
To become an osteopath in Australia, individuals typically complete a five-year university degree program accredited by the Osteopathy Board of Australia. After graduation, they must register with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and adhere to ongoing professional development requirements to maintain their registration and continue practicing as osteopaths.
Osteopathy is a complementary approach to healthcare and can work in private practices, multidisciplinary healthcare clinics, aged care facilities, and other healthcare settings across the country. Osteopaths often work alongside other healthcare professionals, such as general practitioners, exercise physiologists, naturopaths, podiatrists and dieticians, to provide comprehensive care and support patients’ overall health and wellness goals.
