Ankle Pain/ Achilles Tendinitis
Osteopathy for achilles tendinitis and ankle pain
It’s truly amazing how much work our ankles do for the rest of our body. From keeping us balanced and upright to providing strength and agility, your ankles are putting in overtime when it comes to letting you live the life you want. So when chronic pain and inflammation come along – or worse, a sports injury – it’s essential to take care and get back on track.
What is Achilles tendinitis?
Our tendons are thick cords that are found across the body that connect our muscles to our skeleton at our joints. Connecting our calf muscle as the back of our lower legs to our foot bones is the achilles tendon, which you can feel around the back of the ankle.
When this tendon becomes inflamed, it is called achilles tendinitis. Tendinitis can feel like
- Aching in the calf muscle, especially closer to the ankle
- Stiffness, especially in the morning or after rest, that eases with gentle movement
- Lower leg pain that increases during training that involves hills or stair climbs.
This tendon is used when we run, jump and stand on our toes, so can be prone to overuse as well as injury due to sudden movements or impact. Other risk factors for achilles tendinitis include
- Age, as your tendons will naturally weaken as you grow older
- Flat arches in your feet as well as other physical ailments that add pressure to the tendon
- Poor choices of footwear, or inappropriate footwear during training
How can osteopathy help with achilles tendinitis pain?
Your legs, ankles and feet are complex structures which engage bone, muscle and tendon for a wide range of movements. After an indepth look into your medical history, training and lifestyle, your osteopath can work with you to provide a range of treatments that assist in reducing pain and returning range and movement to your ankles and feet. Where necessary, we will also refer out to other specialists and medical professionals to ensure best standards of care.
