Pregnancy Care

Your pregnancy osteopath on the Mornington Peninsula

Congratulations on your pregnancy! While this is a magical time, and your body is doing some incredible things to grow a new little human, it can also be a very challenging time for some mothers-to-be. From swelling in the hands and feet through to back pain and pelvic discomfort, carrying your bundle of joy may put a lot of strain on the body. And let’s not forget the emotional toll you may feel either: You also may find sleeping a challenge, experience new worries and find each day brings an entirely new mood with it.

At Westernport Osteopathy, Alicia takes great pride and interest in obstetric clients, ensuring you are feeling supported during this time, focusing on solutions that work with your lifestyle.

From home exercises and stretches to specialised sessions together, we are here to assist with the wide range of challenges pregnancy may present. Being a mum, Alicia can relate to the journey throughout pregnancy, birth and postpartum.

What causes pain during pregnancy?

Throughout pregnancy your body is undergoing rigorous changes on both a physical and a hormonal level. Some of the hormones that increase during pregnancy are designed to relax joints and muscles, which while helping to accommodate and position your baby also cause pain or discomfort. Likewise, your baby and its growing need for space can put pressure on certain joints or areas.

The body is a pretty remarkable thing when it comes to pregnancy, but so much change isn’t always easy, especially if you have prior injuries or issues.

Common issues during pregnancy include

  • Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD) – Refers to a range of pains or soreness caused by pregnancy in the pelvic area.
  • Lower back pain due to increasing weight as your baby grows
  • Common complaints due to fluid and swelling such as carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Muscular tension due to more physical and mental demand

How can osteopathy assist with pregnancy?

As osteopathy is a holistic management style, we view your pregnancy’s impact across the entire body. Alongside your GP, obstetrician, midwife and other specialists, we’re here to understand where gentle corrections and manual therapies may benefit your body by easing tension, offering you support, and providing you with gentle exercises to help prevent further pains and strains.
